NO OUTSIDE SOURCES Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” (2011)
For your written response, please watch Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” (2011). This is a beautiful, thought-provoking (and somewhat artsy) film which has nothing to do with the Holocaust, except that it is a reflection on why God allows suffering that seems pointless. Some have compared the film to the Book of Job in the Bible, about a good man who loses everything, and dares to ask God “why.” Instead of being given an answer to his suffering, Job is simply shown a vision of God and of the complexity of the universe. In your response: how does this film try to answer the question of why God allows suffering? Are you satisfied with the film’s answer (or non-answer) to the question of suffering? Why or why not (satisfied)?
