S-PLUS
You are required to use 7 sources in your Exegesis Project for this class and during Week 3 of the semester you need to decide what those sources are and secure copies of what you'll be needing during the semester. This week is Sources Week in class, so we'll be considering what you need and how to find those materials. In this assignment, you need to list these sources; (1) a Bible dictionary or Bible handbook, (2) a Study Bible, (3) 3 commentaries at different levels, a Word-study source, and an additional source of your choosing..

C-PLUS
This is a commentary assignment (in 3 parts) related to your assigned biblical text. You can use the attached template.
1. Use the approved source list (posted in the CLASS RESOURCES folder on Blackboard) to select three commentaries for the Bible book for your Exegesis Project. Choose one commentary from each of the three levels. List the commentaries you have chosen.
2. Select a 3-5 verse section of your passage, a section that seems to be a literary unit. Identify which part of your passage you have chosen (include the Bible book/chapter).
3. Read the comments on these verses in each of the three commentaries you have chosen and follow these additional 2 steps: (1) Focusing specifically on the structure and flow-of-thought of the verses you have chosen, in 2-3 sentences descrive how one of the commentaries explains how the verses fit into the surrounding context. Make sure you identify which commentary you are referring to. (2) Identify at least one significant point that you find interesting from each of the other 2 commentaries and write 2-3 sentences about its significance and how it helps you understand the meaning and application of the passage. These points should not be direct quotes and should not be things that are apparent from simply reading the text (even if you have missed them in your reading of the text). Failing to write about significant things that are not already clear in the text will affect your grade for the assignment.

GGW 6-3
After reading chapter 6 carefully, read Revelation 2-3 and list the 7 churches that received a letter. Next, locate the 7 churches (their cities) on a map of Asia Minor in New Testament times (see note below). Trace the route among the 7 churches that a messenger probably followed to deliver the letters. Finally, look up Revelation 3:14-22 in a commentary or a background commentary and make a list of every historical-cultural fact you can find about Laodicea.
NOTE: If you don't have maps in your Bible, use the link in Bb TEXTBOOKS & SYLLABUS folder to access the Crossway collection of Study Bibles. I suggest using the ESV Archaeology Study Bible > Table of Contents > Maps of the New Testament > Setting of Revelation (scroll to bottom).

GGW 8-3
After reading chapter 8 carefully, then find the Old Testament book of Jonah and do the following: (1) Read the entire book and identify how the book is divided into paragraphs or sections; (2) Summarize the main idea of each section in about a dozen words or less; (3) Explain how Jonah 1:13-16 relates to the surrounding context.

GGW 14-22
Find and read carefully the chapter among chapters 14-22 that is related to your assigned biblical text (e.g., if you have a text in John, read chapter 15, "New Testament Gospels"; or if your text is in Isaiah, read chapter 21, "Old Testament Prophets"). Complete any one of the assignments that are listed at the end of the chapter. Make sure you identify which chapter and which assignment you are submitting.

CONTEXT SUMMARY
The student will write a 2-3 page Context Summary (double-space, times new roman 12), dealing with the historical-cultural and literary context of the assigned text (follow guidelines in chapters 6 and 8 of Grasping God’s Word). Use of an approved Bible Dictionary or Bible Handbook and an approved Study Bible is required with proper citation (no more than half credit without these source types). Value: 100 points possible. Due: February 21.

DISCUSSION
I heard a few minutes of a radio preacher not long ago as he preached the life of Joseph. I didn't hear his entire message, but his whole point seemed to be that Joseph kept the vision alive throughout his life; that is, he stayed focused on the dreams he had as a young man and that is what made him the man he was. Your assignment is to read the Joseph discourse in the book of Genesis (chapters 37-50) with this idea in mind. For this long of a story, you should try to read the story quickly, in one sitting. Use your observations to explain why you agree or disagree with the radio preacher's basic conclusion about Joseph's visions. [Is keeping the vision alive the point of the Joseph narrative? If so, what in the story suggests it? If not, what in the suggests that it isn't and what do you see as the big idea in the story?] In the subject line of your posting, give us your i mpression of the overall message of the Joseph story in Genesis (in a few words).
