Canadian Popular Culture Journal
Assignment Guidelines
For your journal entry, write a personal reflection discussing a concept, term, or idea
from recent course material (including course readings, workshops, and module
lessons) in connection with a Canadian popular culture text of your choice.
Choosing Your Topic (pick a concept/term/idea from only 1 of these 4 modules):
Week 6: Religion in Canada
Week 7: Disability in Canada
Week 9: Sexual Diversity in Canada
Week 10: Diversity in Canadian Families
Choosing Your Canadian Popular Culture Text:
A popular culture text generally refers to the artifacts and products associated with
pop culture, including:
Films, television shows (one or two episodes), albums and songs, print ads and
commercials, comic books, popular fiction novels, magazines, a blog, a website, etc.
* Make sure the popular culture text you choose is a Canadian production, or
produced/created by a Canadian, so that your journal reflects on diversity in Canada.
The creator/producer refers to: the film director or producer, the writer, the artist, the

(religion, or disability, or sexuality, or families). In what ways has your
perception of that topic been altered?
– Discuss how the connection between your pop culture text and your chosen
module topic has made you think about the role of Canadian popular
culture/media in everyday life.
Suggestions:
– Watch a Canadian film or episode of a Canadian TV show that details the life
of a Canadian family and connect it to a concept or idea about families (such
as liberation theory) from Module 10: Diversity in Canadian Families.
– Listen to a song or album by a Canadian solo artist or band that reflects on
LGTBQ issues or politics and connect your reflection to a concept or ide
